Everyone know Lara Croft? Even someone who is not so much into gaming will know her; that is the kind of popularity she has. Now, eight editions old, Lara Croft has certainly become sexier and more intelligent. In Tomb Raider: Underworld, which is the franchise's eighth edition, you can see a more realistic Lara thanks to extremely awesome graphics from Crystal Dynamics who have been responsible in evolving Lara from the last three installments, Underworld included. And Lara has become more intelligent too. Not just her, but it is her whole world that has become intelligent. If she falls down, or shoots a shot, the environment will hold her or the bullets' marks. Like in previous Lara games, these damages will not vanish away automatically, but they will persist. It is graphical intelligence such as this that makes Underworld quite playable. The story of Underworld is quite riveting; it directly carries on from the previous installment of the game - Tomb Raider: Legend. In fact, the starting of the game is a short recap of the previous game to tie in with the story. So it would really be a good idea to play Legend first if you haven't done so already. But it is not just the story that is riveting; it is the entire concept of the game. You will find a marked difference here in the playability. Often you will have to perform stunts and solve puzzles together. This was always a Lara hallmark, but in Underworld, there are instances where you have to do these things together. The Tomb Raider series was always considered a difficult game to play at least in comparison to its contemporaries and that's what added to its charm. Tomb Raider: Underworld is no exception. There are times where you will be tearing your hair apart in frustration, especially because Lara is going to fall off ledges that are slippery and take hits more realistically than ever before. But, as you play, you will understand that this is what makes Tomb Raider: Underworld much more memorable. Though this installment of Tomb Raider is much more different and advanced from the previous versions, it still retains most of its hallmark characteristics. Lara Croft is able to shoot simultaneously at two enemies with a gun in each hand. She can even hold an object in one hand and throw a grenade with the other. In fact, she can throw objects that are not grenades too! A development is that of sticky grenades, which allow Lara Croft to run away before the grenade actually explodes. Another wonderful addition is the slow mo sequences that explain various plot scenes. There are no cut scenes in this one, you can still navigate Lara. And just before the action is about to recommence, you can bring Lara out of the line of danger in amazing slow motion. This feature certainly looks neat! Eidos has done a perfect job of evolving Lara according to the times. They have made her graphically superior and the game itself highly intelligent and challenging, but they have not reduced on the hallmark features of the game. This is what makes Tomb Raider: Underworld playable over and over again, just like all the other games of this franchise.
